Terminology
This page is a glossary of sorts for digital video editing terminology. It’s going to grow as the blog grows, meaning instead of spending hours and hours on it up front, I’m going to add important words as I come across them in my regular posts.
Aspect Ratio
The width of an image, divided by it’s height. Common aspect ratios are 4:3 (standard televisions) and 16:9 (widescreen).
AVI
(Audio Video Interleave) - A standard video format created by Microsoft and used on Windows systems.
Compression
Reducing the amount of data contained in a file by changing the its storage format.
Cut
An instant change between two shots. A cut is the most basic type of edit.
Transition
Changing from one shot to the next. The word transition usually implies that an effect is taking place, such as a dissolve, or a fade.
